Our Story

Samba Treffen Berlin is the first festival in Germany which focuses on samba de gafieira dance and samba live-concerts. In 2019 the festival will be held from 4 - 6 October.

Once a year you have the opportunity to meet with other people and share your passion for Samba. The first festival took place in 2015 with the idea of spreading Samba and generally the Brazilian culture in Europe.

In 2019 we will offer:

  • 3 days of workshops of Samba de Gafieira, Samba no Pé, Afro Brasil, Rio Funk and Zouk  with 7 different teachers.
  • 3 nights of parties with live music from amazing samba bands.

Samba de Gafieira is an elegant Brazilian saloon dance. Gafieira is the name for the place where the sambistas dance, normally with live music: the saloon, which has its origins in Europe. Besides the swing and dynamic dance steps, there are also other aspects combined in this style, like creativity, improvisation and playing the music and rhythm. Gafieira is also called samba a dois (samba between two) or samba de salão (saloon samba).

Samba no Pé has its roots in Africa and was brought to and developed in Brazil by African slaves who played and danced in sambas (meetings) to express themselves. It is a solo dance that is often danced impromptu when samba music is played. People usually dance in groups, communicating with each other with various samba steps instead of words.

Afro Brasil combines powerful and expressive steps to African and modern rhythms.

Movements that have their origins in Afro-Brazilian religions like Candomblé , are abstracted and renewed and provide a holistic dance training .

Rio Funk is a music genre from Rio de Janeiro, derived from Miami bass and gangsta rap music. Funk is the biggest music in the favelas (shanty towns) of Brazil. It’s a complete culture that combines its own codes and dance styles with the clothing fads and slangs of the favelas, which often end up incorporated in the vocabulary of the whole city.
